LNG tanker Gimi is currently being converted into a floating LNG facility (FLNG). During the first half of 2022, it will be stationed at a nearshore hub located on the Mauritania and Senegal maritime border. Here, Gimi is set to produce 2.5 million tonnes of LNG annually.
Hamworthy Pumps has supplied three fire water pump packages (FWPP) for the project as a subcontractor to Keppel Shipyard, which is converting the ship for Golar LNG.
Reliable technology and dedicated support
The FWPP units were manufactured and tested according to NFPA 20 regulations at Hamworthy Pumps’ production site in Singapore and were delivered to Keppel Shipyard on time.

New life for old ships
With a conversion, older LNG ships with spherical tanks can function as floating LNG facilities, which prolongs their life. This is the case for Gimi, which was built in 1976 and will be 46-years-old when it is put into operation on the west coast of Africa in 2022.
After the conversion, instead of transporting liquefied natural gas, Gimi will function as a floating production facility which cools, stores and transfers LNG, which a newer ship can then transport.
It is the second time that Keppel Shipyard is converting an LNG carrier into an FLNG facility. The first time was in 2017, when Hilli Episeyo was put into operation in Kribi, Cameroon.
