“The end goal is to have the pump solutions delivered to customers on time”

Meet Senior Production Planner Kwee Lian, who has been involved with production planning at Hamworthy Pumps for almost 30 years.

Senior Production Planner Kwee Lian is a well-known face at Hamworthy Pumps. For the past three decades, she has been heavily involved in production planning at the Singapore plant. It’s a job that entails a tremendous amount of interaction with colleagues.

Kwee Lian’s job has changed significantly over the years. Today, Hamworthy Pumps creates much larger and more complex pump projects than when Kwee Lian started at the company on 1 September 1992.

One specific example she refers to is fire water pump packages – or FWPP’s. Internal development as well as changes in the market has meant that Kwee Lian’s tasks have grown in both complexity and scope. A significant milestone was when production planning for Dolphin Pumps came under her wings in 2012 due to a change of ownership.

Kwee Lian also points out an aspect under constant change: Customers’ focus and needs. Here, too, significant changes have taken place during the almost 30 years.

“The customers’ needs have changed significantly over the years, and they expect more documentation. For example, we perform Factory Acceptance Test and N&V analysis in most of our projects” says Kwee Lian.

Contact with many departments

As Senior Production Planner, one of Kwee Lian’s primary duties is to make sure that the orders are produced when released from the project department.

She must monitor component deficiencies and, at the same time, ensure that production orders in the system are forwarded to the individual departments.

“I communicate with various departments ranging from purchasing, production, project department, engineering, and quality control. The end goal is to have the pump solutions delivered to customers on time (OTD),” she explains about her daily work.

Tom is Hamworthy Pumps’ anchor-man in the Nordic and Baltic countries

Tom Sverre Knutsen has been a veteran in marine industry for the past 37 years with last 14 years in Hamworthy Pumps as Regional Sales Manager for Nordic & Baltic region. To leverage on his experience in marine, Tom extended his service as a Consultant for the company since 2019 where he also assists in conducting training and transferring his knowledge to the juniors.

The customers are shipowners, and a large part of the work is with Norwegian shipowners and trading houses. “I am the only employee in Norway who deals with new business and aftersales. Norway is a relatively large shipping nation and has a huge shipping market,” says Tom.

He adds that he sees market demand currently on the rise after a period of declining activity.

Engineering background

In his many years as a sales engineer, Tom Sverre Knutsen has used his engineering background as a sounding board for customers.

He is trained as an electrical engineer. He also has experience in the process industry, including oil and gas, and he has worked in the automation industry.

However, the current industry is special.

“The marine industry is unique, and I love visiting the customers, who are extremely dynamic,” says the sales manager.

Focus on OEM parts

He has a sharp focus on serving customers quickly and well in his work, which is why he also works hard to explain the benefits of buying original spare parts when pumps need servicing. This is the customer’s best guarantee for optimum performance and minimum critical downtime of the pump.

“We are fighting to bring genuine parts back to the market. 20 years ago, replica parts accounted for 20% of parts in the market. Now half of the spare parts are replicas,” estimates Tom Sverre Knutsen.

“Our response times are optimal, and our pricing is competitive even given that we are the OEM and only offer genuine parts”, he adds.

Besides stocking various bare-shaft pump models, Hamworthy Pumps has up to 85% spares requirement readily available for worldwide delivery to meet customers’ project schedules.

Experienced manager is the backbone in project development

Hamworthy Pumps has dedicated and loyal employees with long seniority. One of the employees who has been working at the pump manufacturer for the longest time is Project Management Manager Toh Thye Kwong. For a quarter of a century, his workplace has been at Hamworthy Pumps.

Toh Thye Kwong is the backbone of the Project Department. He is involved in the projects from start to finish to ensure that the projects develop according to plan. He oversees all the Project Engineers and Project Managers.

– I ensure projects are delivered on time and within budget. I confirm the preparation of certified drawings, documentation, and progress report for submission to the customer, says Toh.

Toh has worked in the offshore and marine industry all his working life. First at a shipyard for 16 years and since 1996 at Hamworthy Pumps.

Expanding business

During his 25 years of service, Hamworthy Pumps has changed ownership and name on several occasions. At the same time, the product portfolio has also been expanded. Over time Hamworthy Pumps has added waste treatment systems, fire-fighting systems, and fire water pump packages to the product range.

This has given Toh Thye Kwong a wider palette of projects to keep track of.

– I’m Involved in the co-ordination of factory acceptance testing and involved in the preparation of packing lists, orders, and shipping documents, says Toh.
